MIX will open on
Saturday, July 17, 2010 from 12 to 6 pm as part of the Miracle Mile Art
Walk (http://www.miraclemileartwalk.com/galleries.html),
followed by a special reception from 6 to 9 pm. The exhibition is open on
Fridays and Saturdays and will run until Saturday, August 14.

the SUMMER MIX Exhibition Organized
by LACMA’s Photographic Arts Council (PAC), SUMMER MIX showcases the diverse voices
of 43 of its members, among whom are professional photographers, gallery
owners, collectors, educators, serious amateurs, and photo enthusiasts. SUMMER
MIX illustrates the important role PAC plays in fostering community-wide
appreciation of photography, celebrating the richly layered photographic
community of Los Angeles.

HE BRINGS TOGETHER 7 REMARKABLE PHOTOGRAPHIC ARTISTS, ALL DEVOTED TO CONTINUING THE TRADITION OF ALTERNATIVE PHOTOGRAPHIC PROCESSES PRIMARILY CREATED WITH ANTIQUE PHOTOGRAPHIC EQUIPMENT. ALL ARE PASSIONATE OVER THE CRAFT OF HAND MADE IMAGE MAKING, THEIR IMAGERY USING PROCESS OVER 150 YEARS OLD. FROM ONE OF PHOTOGRAPHIES OLDEST PROCESSES, THE CYANOTYPE, INVENTED IN 1840, THE ARDUOUS AND EXTREMELY DIFFICULT WET PLATE PROCESS FROM 1851, TO THE REFINED AND ELEGANT PLATINUM PROCESS FROM 1873, EACH PROCESS REQUIRES YEARS OF MASTERY AND SPECIALIZED EQUIPMENT TO MAKE THESE UNIQUE AND EXQUISITE IMAGES.
PATRICK ALT PRESENTS IMAGES FROM HIS LATEST BODY OF WORK, THE GODDESS IMAGES, WHICH WERE SHOT ON AN 1890’S VINTAGE MAMMOTH PLATE CAMERA CREATING AN 18” X 22” NEGATIVE WHICH WAS THEN PRINTED IN CYANOTYPE. IN THIS SERIES, ALL OF THE STAGING AND ACCESSORIES WERE CREATED BY HIM IN HIS STUDIO/WOODSHOP, WHICH BRINGS A SINGULAR VISION TO THE TRADITION OF THE FEMALE NUDE. PRINTED BY CONTACT WITH ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT, THIS RELATIVELY SIMPLE BUT FINICKY PROCESS CREATES IMAGES OF A RICH TONALITY OF PRUSSIAN BLUE.
ELIZABETH DELGADILLO-MERFELD MAKES ENIGMATIC AND MYSTERIOUS 5” X 7” TINTYPES. USING HERSELF AS HER MODEL, WHICH SHE SAYS ELIMINATES HAVING TO DEAL WITH COMPLAINING MODELS, HER WORK INVESTIGATES THE NATURE OF IDENTITY, BOTH PERSONAL AND CULTURAL. THE TIN TYPE IS A VARIATION OF THE WET PLATE PROCESS, USING SHEETS OF METAL INSTEAD OF GLASS IN WHICH TO MAKE HER ONE-OF-A-KIND PHOTOGRAPHS.
KEN MERFELD PORTRAITS ARE AMONGST THE STRONGEST DEPICTIONS OF THE DEPTH AND EMOTION OF THE HUMAN FACE AVAILABLE ONLY TO THE MOST GIFTED TO IMAGE MAKERS. HIS USAGE OF THE WETPLATE PROCESS AND THE TIMELESS APPEARANCE OF THE FINISHED WORK ONLY ENHANCES THE POWER OF HIS PORTRAITURE. MADE AS AMBROTYPES, AN UNDEREXPOSED NEGATIVE MADE POSITIVE WITH A BLACK BACKGROUND, HE PURPOSEFULLY ALLOWS THE DRIPS, RUNS, AND OTHER ARTIFACTS INHERENT IN THE PROCESS TO REMAIN PART OF THE IMAGE. THIS CREATES AN ETHEREAL AND DISQUIETING ASPECT TO THE DEPICTION OF THE HUMAN FACE, FORCED TO REMAIN STATIONARY FOR A MINUTE WHILE THE SLOW SENSITIZER IS EXPOSED.
DAVID JOHN LOTTO IS THE ONLY HYBRID OF THE GROUP, WITH ONE FOOT IN THE 19TH CENTURY AND THE OTHER IN THE 21ST. A NOTED AND WIDELY EXHIBITED PLATINUM PRINTER, HE TURNED TO WET PLATE 2 YEARS AGO AS A NEW WAY IN WHICH TO PRODUCE HIS WORK. BUT MISSING HIS WORK IN PLATINUM, HE HAS CREATED A UNIQUE PROCESS WHEREIN HE CREATES HIS IMAGES IN WETPLATE ON A VERY SMALL CAMERA, THEN SCANS THE IMAGE AND MAKES 14’ X 17” DIGITAL NEGATIVES FROM WHICH HE CREATES HIS PLATINUM PRINTS. HE WILL BE EXHIBITING BOTH THE ORIGINAL AMBROTYPES AND THE RESULTING PLATINUM PRINTS TOGETHER FOR PEOPLE TO SEE HOW DIFFERENT THE SAME IMAGE IS WHEN PRINTED IN 2 VERY DIFFERENT PROCESSES.
STEVE RAINES AND ROBERT FINLEY, TWO FRIENDS AND COLLEAGUES, OFTEN TRAVEL THE COUNTRY TOGETHER, PHOTOGRAPHING. BOTH ARE MASTERS OF THE PLATINUM PROCESS AND MAKE SOME OF THE FINEST EXAMPLES OF THE PROCESS TO BE SEEN ANYWHERE. BOTH SHARE AN INTEREST IN THE AMERICAN LANDSCAPE, NOT THOSE OF ANSEL ADAMS, BUT IN THE TRADITION OF WALKER EVANS AND THE LATER WORK OF EDWARD WESTON. BOTH WORK WITH 8 X 10 CAMERAS, IT’S LARGE SIZE MAKES AN INDELIBLE IMPRESSION ON HOW THE WORLD IS SEEN THROUGH THE GROUND GLASS. PLATINUM PRINTS ARE CONSIDERED BY MANY TO BE THE QUINESSENTIAL BLACK AND WHITE PHOTOGRAPH NOTED FOR IT’S EXTENDED TONAL RANGE, SOFT THREE DIMENSIONALITY, AND IS ALSO CONSIDERED ONE OF THE LONGEST LASTING OF ALL PHOTOGRAPHIC PROCESSES.
LASTLY, WE WILL BE PRESENTING THE NEW WORK OF MASTER WETPLATE PHOTOGRAPHER, LUTHER GERLACH. THIS WILL BE THE FIRST EXHIBITION OF WORK CREATED WITH THE NEW ALTVIEW BEHEMOTH PLATE CAMERA. CURRENTLY THE LARGEST CAMERA OF IT’S TYPE IN THE WORLD, THE BEHEMOTH PLATE MAKES 22” X 30” WET PLATE AMBROTYPES. BUILT WITH PATRICK ALT, WHO IS ALSO A MASTER CAMERA DESIGNER AND MAKER, THIS 82 POUND SOLID MAHOGANY CAMERA, WAS DESIGNED AND BUILT TO REPLICATE THE STYLE AND MOVEMENTS OF 1860-1870 VINTAGE CAMERAS. LUTHER IS THE MASTER OF THE 4 THEMES IN ART; PORTRAITS, NUDES, LANDSCAPES, AND STILL LIFES. THE TECHNICAL AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS TO MAKE IMAGES OF THIS SIZE ARE ALMOST UNIMAGINABLE. THE RESULTING IMAGES WILL SURELY BE AMONGST THE MOST IMPORTANT WORKS IN THE 21ST CENTURY.
THE OPENING FOR THE SHOW IS SEPT. 12 AND THE OPENING RECEPTION WILL BE FROM 6 TO 9 IN THE EVENING AND WILL COINCEDE WITH OPENING OF OTHER GALLERIES ON WILSHIRE BLVD. PLEASE JOIN US FOR ONE OF THE MOST UNIQUE AND EXCITING EXHIBITIONS OF PHOTOGRAPHY TO BE SHOWN IN LOS ANGELES.

GALLERY OPENING – Visions by Photography teachers of Los Angeles On June 6, 2009, in Los Angeles, CA, the Creative Photography Workshop & Gallery has its first exhibit, highlighting the images of high school photography teachers from across Los Angeles, including Marlborough, Crossroads and Hamilton High etc. The images range from gritty streets scenes to revealing portraiture. This is a unique show of photographs by the artists who teach the kids of Los Angeles to interpret their world through pictures.
This show concept spotlights the too-often hidden talents of teachers with years of experience and fine arts backgrounds who have devoted themselves to nurturing the work of others rather than promoting their own careers. “It take so much time and energy to teach well that it’s s hard for them to find the time and place to show their own work,” says Tracey, the mother of three boys in Los Angeles public and private schools ages 16 to 18.
A percentage of all show sales will go to P.S. ART www.psarts.org devoted to restoring arts education in the schools – a passion for Tracey as an involved parent and artist.
